Metro Bank Colleague’s Inspiration Journey in raising over £200 in London Marathon for Hackney’s Youth
The UK’s community bank, Metro Bank, gives every colleague a Day to Amaze – essentially a paid day off to support a local charity or good cause. Russell Ahmed, a Metro Bank colleague recently showcased his resilience and commitment to Hackney by participating in the recent London Marathon to support The Outrunners Charity and Running Club, an organization that provides crucial mentoring to young people in Hackney, helping them navigate their careers and lives.
Russell’s journey towards the London Marathon started last year in October, facing the challenges of dark, cold evenings that tested his determination. Despite the obstacles, he pressed on knowing that each mile was a step closer to supporting a cause close to his heart. He faced a significant setback in early February when he suffered from a Medical Collateral Ligament injury jeopardizing his marathon preparations. The initial prognosis suggested he might not recover in time for the April 21st event; however, Russell defied the odds. He not only recovered from the injury but also utilized the six weeks leading up to the marathon to train rigorously, both mentally and physically.
What made Russell’s participation even more poignant was his deep connection to Hackney, a place he proudly calls home. Russell was able to raise £245 for The Outrunners Charity.
“Despite the obstacles, both physical and mental, I remained determined to complete the marathon and raise awareness for a cause that means so much to me,” says Metro Bank Payments Team Leader, Russell Ahmed. “I want to extend my heartfelt gratitude to everyone who contributed to raising £245 for The Outrunners Charity. To the volunteers and everyone who cheered along the marathon route, your encouragement kept me going.”
